• the top sheet (cb or coated back),

• the bottom sheet (cf or coated front).

when pressure is applied to the top sheet through writing or printing, the microcapsules containing colorless dye on the back of the sheet rupture. this releases the dye, which reacts with a clay coating on the middle sheet, creating a visible copy of the original content.

the bottom sheet, with a clay coating on the front, acts as the receiving sheet, ensuring the transfer of the dye to create a duplicate copy.
