The Most Common Receipt Paper Sizes Explained
Receipt paper comes in a surprising number of sizes, and using the wrong one means wasted rolls, jammed printers, and interrupted service. This guide covers every standard receipt paper size in use today, what equipment uses each one, and how to identify which size you need.
Why Receipt Paper Sizes Matter
Receipt paper rolls are precision-cut to match specific printer and terminal compartments. Even a difference of 1/8 inch in width can cause a roll to jam, slip, or produce uneven prints. Always confirm your paper size before ordering — especially in bulk.
The Most Common Receipt Paper Sizes
3 1/8" x 230' (80mm)
The most widely used receipt paper size in North America. Found in the majority of modern POS receipt printers used in restaurants, retail, hotels, and convenience stores. Compatible with Epson TM-T88 series, Star TSP100 series, Citizen CT-S series, Bixolon SRP-350 series, and most other standard countertop POS printers.
2 1/4" x 85' (58mm)
The standard size for most credit card terminals and mobile payment devices. Compatible with Verifone VX520, Ingenico iCT220, PAX S300, Clover Mini, First Data FD130, and most other standalone payment terminals. Also available in longer lengths (50', 100', 130') depending on the terminal model.
3 1/8" x 165'
A shorter version of the standard 80mm roll. Used in the same printers as 3 1/8" x 230' but preferred when a smaller roll diameter is required, or for lower-volume printing environments. Also common in some older POS printer models with smaller paper compartments.
3 1/8" x 273'
A longer roll for high-volume environments like busy restaurants or retail locations. Fewer roll changes during peak hours. Compatible with printers that accept a larger roll diameter.
3 1/8" x 660'
A jumbo roll used in high-volume applications or printers specifically designed for longer rolls. Common in some kitchen printers and kiosk applications where minimizing paper changes is a priority.
2 1/4" x 50'
A shorter roll for credit card terminals with smaller paper compartments, or for low-volume transaction environments. Common in older Verifone and Hypercom models.
3" x 165' and 3" x 230'
Slightly narrower than the 3 1/8" standard. Used in some older POS systems and cash registers. Less common today but still in use in some legacy equipment.
4 3/8" x 127' (111mm)
Used in some older electronic cash registers and adding machines. Less common in modern POS environments but still available for legacy equipment.
ATM Receipt Paper Sizes
ATM machines use thermal paper but often require proprietary dimensions specific to the machine brand and model. Common ATM paper sizes include:
- 3 1/8" x 400' — Triton, Hantle, and some Hyosung models
- 3 1/8" x 1000' — High-capacity ATM journal rolls for Diebold and NCR
- 2 1/4" x various lengths — Some compact ATM models
Always verify ATM paper dimensions by checking the machine documentation or measuring the existing roll.
How to Identify Your Receipt Paper Size
There are three reliable ways to identify the paper size you need:
- Check the existing roll — Most commercial paper rolls have the size printed on the label
- Check the printer documentation — The user manual or spec sheet lists required paper dimensions
- Measure it — Use a ruler to measure the width of the roll from edge to edge, and note the roll's outer diameter
Does Roll Length Matter?
Roll length affects how often you need to change paper. Longer rolls mean fewer interruptions during service, which is especially valuable in high-volume environments. However, your printer has a maximum roll diameter it can accommodate — loading a roll that's too large will prevent the paper compartment from closing.
A good rule of thumb: use the longest roll your printer can accept. For most 3 1/8" printers, that's typically a 230' roll in a standard 3" diameter.
