How to Measure a Thermal Paper Roll
A roll that is too wide, too large in diameter, or has the wrong core size can cause feeding issues, printer jams, or prevent the printer cover from closing properly.
Fortunately, measuring a thermal paper roll only takes a few minutes.
Why Measuring Matters
Thermal paper rolls come in a variety of sizes to suit different types of equipment. A compact credit card terminal, for example, uses a much smaller roll than a full-size point-of-sale receipt printer.

Measure the Roll Width
The width is the first and most important measurement.
Using a ruler or tape measure, measure straight across the face of the paper from one edge to the other.
Some of the most common thermal paper widths include:
- 57 mm
- 80 mm
Smaller portable payment terminals often use 57 mm rolls, while many retail receipt printers use 80 mm rolls.
Always measure the paper itself rather than the packaging.

Consider Paper Length
Paper length refers to the total amount of paper wound around the core. Unlike width and diameter, paper length isn't always easy to measure directly because it depends on the roll's diameter, the size of the core, and the thickness of the paper.
Most manufacturers include the paper length in the product description or packaging.
If you are replacing an existing roll, checking the original product specifications is usually the easiest way to match the correct length.
Confirm That It is Thermal Paper
Before ordering replacements, make sure your printer actually uses thermal paper.
Thermal paper has a heat-sensitive coating that reacts to the printer's thermal printhead. It requires no ink, toner, or ribbon.
A quick way to identify thermal paper is to gently scratch the surface with your fingernail. If a dark mark appears, the paper is thermal. If no mark appears, your printer may require bond paper and an ink ribbon instead.
